When mudwings are born they are completely on their own with only their siblings for family. The first to hatch is called the Bigwings and has the instinct to crack his or her sibling eggs to help them hatch in case they are too weak to do so on their own.

The guardians of the Dragonets of Destiny did not know this and had to step in to stop Clay from what they thought was an attack on the unhatched dragonets. Poor little clay.
